Adding Infrastructure

Teams, Functions and Applications are relatively straightforward modeling Elements.  Infrastructure is more complex and requires that some options be selected.

The first step is to pick the type of Infrastructure.  There are several different types:

  • Compute.  General compute such as ESX hosts, Database servers or other hardware based compute.
  • Storage  SANs and other storage equipment.
  • Networking.  Switches, Firewalls, and Core Routing Equipment.
  • Virtual.  Virtual servers aren't often added individually with the wizard.
  • ESX.  An ESX vSphere environment.
  • Service.  Services include Office365 or any special model elements that are infrastructure but not any of the other categories.

The next step is to provide general information about the Infrastructure.  This includes the following:

  • The name of the infrastructure
  • The start date when the infrastructure was commissioned or bought.
  • The stop date when the infrastructure would be finally decommissioned.
  • The capital cost of the infrastructure (if any)

The next step is to provide specific information, dependent on the type of infrastructure chosen.

Compute

  • Serial.  the serial number of the infrastructure if appropriate
  • Vendor.  The vendor that provided the infrastructure
  • Descripttion.  A description of the infrastructure
  • CPU
  • Memory
  • IP Address
  • Storage
  • Operating System.  Choose one of the base operating systems.
  • Utilization.  The percentage of the hours per month the compute is in use

Facility

  • Address.  The location of the facility.

Storage

  • Serial.  the serial number of the infrastructure if appropriate
  • Vendor.  The vendor that provided the infrastructure
  • Descripttion.  A description of the infrastructure
  • Storage

Virtual

  • Descripttion.  A description of the infrastructure
  • CPU
  • Memory
  • IP Address
  • Storage
  • Operating System.  Choose one of the base operating systems.
  • Utilization.  The percentage of the hours per month the compute is in use

The next step is to indicate any depdendent Infrastructure or Costs.

Following this the next step is to either complete the Infrastructure or hit Cancel to delete it.
